3 Musician Mindsets & Practices to Master Your Music

by Cari Cole

Success in anything is an inside game. We can only do, have, be what we believe we can. Even more, what our subconscious believes we can. That’s why self-care is such a powerful practice, and is not a form of coddling or wimpiness.

Here are my 3 Musicpreneur Mindsets & Practices to Master

1. Look for the Positive

Practice seeing the positive, speaking positive and thinking positive. There is a silver lining in everything no matter how challenging. Life is a mighty river that is constantly flowing, forging it’s way through the twists and turns, crashing over the rocks and bending and shaping its way along the rugged shoreline and river bed. Since the river is flowing regardless of whether you want it to or not, it’s better to surrender to the current instead of fighting, resisting it, or worse, trying to control it. We can’t control nature, the wind, the weather — and in a sense, we can’t control our lives. We can direct them, but we have to flow along our river of life. That said, when things get tough (and it’s tough at times for all of us), give yourself time to rest, heal up, grieve and mourn, but then fall back into the flow of the river that is careening it’s way along.

2. Practice Self-Care

One way to move yourself along eloquently and gracefully through life and the trials of a career in music is to practice self-care. Self-care is not for wimps, it’s for the fierce hearted, determined soul who wants to embrace the current of life and work with the flow as best as they can. Many artists I meet (myself included), have times of struggling with self-care. They tend to take care of everyone else leaving themselves last in line. But how can you help others if you can’t help yourself? The more you practice self-care, the sooner you will step into your power, help yourself and be able to give so much more to others — including your fans.

3. Daily Self-Care Morning Practice

I’ve been talking a lot about this lately because I have stepped up my own daily practice of self-care and I am once again, reminded of how powerful it is in one’s self. Matter of fact, everything stems from it. Your mindset, your personal energy and power, your ability to move through decisions and challenges with more clarity, ease and grace.

A. Gratitude

The first thing I like to do when when I wake up, is to ask myself one thing that I am grateful for. Then I say it out loud: “I am grateful for my ________ (fill in the blank.) It can be super simple. Even on a morning when I feel like crap, or am tired, this quick 2-3 minute practice turns around my mood and sets a positive tone for the day. When you set a positive tone for the day, it sets up your subconscious to look for the good.

B. Set Your Intention for the Day:

Next after stating what I am grateful for, I ask myself what I would like to experience more of that day. Say I have an overbooked day of clients because I am squeezing people in trying to help everyone, I might say to myself that I’d like the day to be enjoyable and smooth, even with the intensity of work ahead. So then I might say “I intend to experience more joy in my work today.” That sets my subconscious up to look for the joy in the moments and throughout the day I am reminded of my intention and focus on it more, creating a more enjoyable experience amidst the challenges.

C. Meditate:

Those 2 practices above which take all of 5 minutes 🙂 — are a powerful redirect for your subconscious. It’s just about consistency — do it every morning like brushing your teeth or washing your face and soon you’ll feel the power of it.

If you want to take it up another notch — add in meditation. I have been practicing Transcendental Meditation for a few years now and I must say it’s the most effective form I’ve ever experienced. Just 20 minutes a day is a big change in decreasing stress and improving productivity. The clarity and peace of mind that comes with it is priceless. In TMM you practice 20 minutes twice a day, but I can’t always get to twice – and just once a day does wonders. Heals PTSD too ;).

If you start practicing this, let me know what you experience — I’d love to hear how it works for you. There are many other wonderful ways to practice self-care, like massage, yoga, working out, hiking, walking, going to a movie, taking long baths, joining a group of like minded musicians and being surrounded by people you love, who love you.

Hope this rocks your world of self-care. Can’t wait to hear from you! Xo
