Part 1: Cari will examine the lyrical styles of well-known songwriters from storytelling to poetic to conversational and confessional. Learn how to broaden your lyric-writing approach and perspective to include fictional stories and your real life experiences to build your song catalog.
Part 2: Cari explores the science of how to infuse more meaning and emotion into your songs and how to craft compelling stories from your lived experience. Discover the art of authentic lyric writing and how and why it builds a deeper connection with the listener.
Amy explores how figures of speech play an important role in writing, including personification, similes, and metaphors. Learn how ‘flipping the phrase’ and blending figures of speech, can turn the line into something beautifully relatable to others, while the artist knows the true meaning behind it.
Amy also shares how to use figures of speech to avoid cliches and overused phrases and teaches the art of “show” vs. “tell” in order to paint a clear image for your listener. Learn the methods that show your listeners what room, that arm, that street all look like and ultimately feel like.
Jilian Linklater provides an in-depth look at confessional songwriting and the importance of telling the truth in your songs. She shares why you need to write what you now, see and experience instead of filling blank spaces with pretty, yet meaningless words.
She will share how to make up fictional stories while basing your message on lived experiences and reality so your songs are based in truth and authenticity. Also learn how to use allegories and create characters to represent real people (Think of how Taylor Swift does this really well.) Every line needs to be rooted in truth, even if it’s fictional.
We end the day by implementing everything we teach and transform lyrics in a real-time during our LIVE songwriting collaboration with Spotlight Participants.
