I remember my artist self days. Back when I went to music school in New York and waitressed to get by. Those 10,000 hours of music theory, guitar and voice lessons, pulling my hair out to write songs that were any good – trying to make it as an artist.
I remember answering an ad once for a producer looking for a singer. I had never responded to something like that before. I was soooo nervous. I remember I got on the Path train to Hoboken (from NYC) to meet him – I mean he had worked with Madonna for chrissake! He had me singing this song he wrote and it was going pretty well, but I remember thinking to myself – thought bubble appears – “This is not what I’m about – I’m an artist.” And the same thought would rear it’s head every time I did a session singing for some commercial or demoed a song for a songwriter – it wouldn’t leave me alone. Even though I coach artists for TV competitions, if I was pursuing my artist career right now I couldn’t bring myself to compete. Music was never a competition – that was sacrilege to me. Blasphemy!
At the time I just thought something was wrong with me. Why wouldn’t I want to work in the industry? How was I ever going to be successful if I didn’t buck up and just do it? But something would always pull me away. It was like quicksand – and the fact that it didn’t keep my interest. Until – I found my muse. I found the reason why I went to all those music classes and attended all those voice lessons. I found my artistry. It was a path I had to walk to get there. And I’m so glad I stuck it out long enough to get there. And I hope you do too.
If you want to get on your path I invite you to a free 3 part training adventure – but do it now because it’s only up for another few weeks.
