Over the years I have helped my clients get Grammys, score licensing, label and management deals, set up international tours, and land magazine features like Rolling Stone.
Imagine where you could be by the end of next year—performing, connecting with fans, and living your dream.
Whether you are just starting out or have been playing for years, having clear objectives can help you stay motivated, focused, and ultimately achieve your dreams.
Goal setting provides a roadmap for your musical career, allowing you to first define what you want to achieve and provides a framework for tracking your progress along the way.
Goal setting is not just a practical exercise— it is a process that profoundly impacts your musical journey.
Here are my Top 5 Goal Setting Techniques to Boost Your Music Career in 2025.
1. Know What You Want
The first step in goal-setting is to define your goal. This means stating what you want in clear and specific terms.
You can’t do that until you know what you want. Knowing what you want is the bedrock to reach your goals. A good plan starts with knowing what it is that you really want. You can’t get to where you are going if you don’t know what you want.
It’s important to be honest with yourself here. This is between you and the Universe. Be ruthlessly honest with yourself. What do you want?
Ask yourself these questions:
- Where would you like to see yourself in 5+ years?
- Does that goal fit the lifestyle that you want?
- What goal aligns best with your lifestyle?
- If you were looking back in your life review, what would be the one thing that you would want to be sure you had achieved?
Whether you’re looking to tour or stay local, create an engaged online community, or find success through Film and TV placements, or play music as medicine—you can design a career that aligns with your lifestyle and artistic goals.
Maybe you want to be a local stay-at-home artist that raises a family or lives in nature?
Or maybe you want to tour the world? Read more about my 5 Paths to a Building a Successful Music Career here.
Once you identify your vision, it’s all about developing a focused strategy to bring that vision to life.
You can build the career you are dreaming of, that fits your goals and lifestyle—with the right approach, strategies, know-how, and plan.
2. Know How to Get It
Knowing what you want and how to get it is the magic formula. The music industry is not a linear or clear path. There are many different pathways to pursue as well as a variety of sectors of the industry to work towards.
Whether you are a singer-songwriter, a hip-hop artist, or an entertainer interested in the world stage, knowing the right path and strategies to reach your goals is the key to attaining them.
So once you set your goals, consult with experts to get their help building your strategy. Read Wikipedias and biographies of how artists rose up in the ranks. It happens slightly differently for each artist. There is no one set path.
- Read Wikipedias and biographies of how artists rose up in the ranks and formed their careers.
- Talk to other artists who have more experience than you and ask them for advice.
- Talk to music mentors who have experience working with artists in the industry and ask them about how to reach your goals? What strategies have they seen be successful and how can you apply them?
3. Set the Right Goals
Once the goal is defined, the next step is to make a plan. This includes figuring out what needs to be done to achieve the goal and when it needs to be done.
Goal setting strategies help!
Ask yourself this?
- Where do you want to be in 3-5 years?
- What kind of career path would align with your lifestyle and goals?
Then:
- Set three top goals you want to accomplish in the next year.
- Choose the #1 goal that everything else flows into.
4. Reverse Engineer
Now that you have your top three goals it’s time to create an action plan. We use the strategy of reverse engineering which is to start with the end goal and work backwards filling in the to do list and goalposts.
Ask yourself:
- What needs to happen in Month 11 to reach your 1 year goal?
- Then go backwards from there, Month 10, 9, 8 etc.
- Create the timeline of goals per quarter or per month and then fill in all of the action steps to execute. Aim for the highest peak.
Reverse engineering is a goal setting technique that helps you to realize the action steps and goalposts you need to hit in order to reach your goals. They also help you stay on track and accountable as you move through the year.
Remember, we overestimate what we can do in a year and underestimate what we can do in ten. It’s okay to be ambitious, and it’s okay not to reach your goals. Setting a somewhat ambitious goal helps you grow faster. As the famous mentor Les Brown said “Aim for the moon and land among the stars.”
5. Stay Focused and Avoid Distraction
One of the best ways to avoid distractions and temptations that pull you off course, is to ask yourself “Does this lead to my goal or lead me off the path?”
Oftentimes as we move through the year new ideas and strategies will arise. Use your gut feeling to determine whether these are “now” or “later” endeavors.
The question “Does this lead to my goal this year” will help you stay on track. That said sometimes pivots or new ideas are good to implement, but you run the risk of being pulled off task.
Try this when considering a pivot or new idea:
- Ask yourself “Does this lead to my goal or lead me off the path?”
- Adjust or pivot to integrate the new ideas but keep your main goal.
- Or schedule a later date to circle back to the pivot or new idea later on in the year (or next year).
- Wait 2 weeks and see if the pivot or new idea still feels like a good idea and adjust accordingly.
