Here are ten steps to getting your music out of the gate.
- Set Goals. If you don’t know where you’re going how are you going to get there? Set goals, make a plan, draw a map.
- Set Up Systems. Get a VA (Virtual Assistant) to help you with social media, and your administration (it’s not your genius work) Automate as much as you can.
- Contribute and Get In Conversation. Invite new fans into your sphere by getting into conversation with them first. If they dig you, you can be sure they’ll hunt down your music.
- Build Your Brand. One photo across all your platforms. Make sure it’s AH-MAZING.
- Don’t ignore Twitter – period. Learn how to use it. Don’t just post and wait for followers. The enormous potential of new relationships forged on this platform will make your head spin. Amanda Palmer has proven it.
- Get with the New Music Business Model. Now’s the time to understand what the heck is going on out there.
- Plan your Release. Don’t just put it up on iTunes and wait and see.
- Are You Registered with SoundExchange? There are new income streams out there but you can’t catch them if you don’t know where they are.
- Understand How the Music Industry Works. Information is power.
- Build Relationships With People You Admire and Trust. It’s the relationships you build that make careers happen.
