Feng Shui Your Music Career

As some of you may have seen on my Facebook lately, I’ve been diggin this super simple, easy-to-understand Feng Shui book lately called Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life by Karen Rauch Carter. It’s no secret that the environment you’re in can affect your mood (if you’ve ever been in a rehearsal room where people have been smoking and generally trashing the place and you have to sing, you know what I’m talking about!). It’s up to you to create a safe haven for your creativity and music career. Here are some tips I’ve gleaned for using Feng Shui to help your music!

BASIC FENG SHUI TIPS:

Clean Up & Remove Clutter
In Feng Shui your outside environment is a reflection of your inner state and beliefs (conscious and unconscious). Dirt, dust, hairballs and broken things are all signs that your inner life needs some cleaning up – so get rid of them! Taking some time to clean the nooks and crannies and mend or throw out your broken stuff will clear the way for your life in ways you can’t imagine. Leaving that stuff in your path only reminds you of broken or failed things from your past. Sometimes it’s the very thing the doc ordered when it comes to moving your forward with your life and music.

Add “Cures”
Feng Shui is all about directing the energy (called “chi”) of a room so that it’s moving around freely and doesn’t escape. You want to increase the chi around you to keep things flowing in your life. Here are a few “cures” to get energy moving in your space. Add mirrors, plants (keep them healthy!), moving objects, living things, wind chimes (and other pleasant sounds), or light to increase the chi in your home.

MUSIC FENG SHUI TIPS:

Pump Up Your Fame + Reputation Baguas
In feng shui, your space is divided into nine sections (baguas). This applies to your entire house and also your individual room. The Fame and Reputation Bagua is in the back center section of your space (the furthest wall from the front door). The color red, triangular objects, wood, the color green, the television, stained glass, photos of musicians you admire, plants, items that represent fire, recognition items and awards, and your personal wish list of what you want to public to think about you are great items for this space! Get rid of any water symbols, black things that symbolize what you don’t want to be, and mirrors (they equal water in feng shui).

Writer’s Block? Pump up Your Creativity Bagua
The creativity bagua is in the middle right section of your space. Adding metal objects, white objects, round things, the color yellow, music objects, lights, bells, symbols of your creativity, and anything childlike or playful will help this area! Get rid of fire objects, the color red, and triangular or pointy objects.

Use Symbolism
Use objects to inspire you with your music! Records, albums, instruments, sheet music, guitar strings, festival posters, whatever looks like success in music to you – surround your space with those objects. They will constantly remind you of your purpose and what you want to achieve.
