1. Vocal technique
Your voice is an instrument. The quickest way to improve your voice in performance and on record is to train with vocal technique to open up your voice, decrease tension, increase strength and improve tone, range, breath and high notes. Training will not take away your style, it will only improve your voice. Start with my Singers Gift Vocal Warmups to transform your singing voice. Use the coupon code: SG2off to save $25.00.
2. Phrasing
The phrasing makes your vocal feel good. It brings more soul to the vocal. Phrasing is the rhythm of the vocal line – how it sits in the music. Your vocal line is a melodic instrument but also a rhythmic instrument. Anchor your voice in the beat of the song (the downbeats) and then execute the rhythm of your vocal line.
Learn to sit in the music. Don’t rush your phrases or you’ll sound too “eager.” Don’t fall too far behind or it will sound “sloppy”. Try sitting “in the pocket”, anchoring your vocal line with the drums while you sing.
3. Vocal comping
Demoing your voice and recording in your home studio is one of the quickest and best ways to improve your voice. As you record and listen back, you’ll hear what you are actually doing. As you use software to monitor pitch and rhythm, both of those will improve.
Here are my tips:
- Record a few takes.
- Listen back and mark your lyric sheet with the takes you like with a 1 or 2 designating the take.
- Sing 2-3 more takes.
- Mark your lyric sheet with these takes.
- Create a new track and make a vocal comp of the best takes.
- Punch in any parts you didn’t get.
- Open Melodyne or a pitch software.
- Look at where you can improve in regards to pitch or rhythm.
- Make corrections in the software.
- Demo every song you sing live or in preparation for recording.
This process will improve your vocals and your ear, pitch and phrasing.
4. Singing with more emotion
Emotion in performance and recording is the magic element that bonds with your listeners. However, it’s not as simple as just “feeling your feelings”. Oftentimes singing with more emotion, without technical prowess ends up causing strain and constriction at the throat. So number one is to train in vocal technique so your voice can express more emotion.
Secondly, learn vocal arranging techniques. Vocal arranging is one of the most unknown secrets that elevates a singer’s performance. Vocal arranging is the art of creating a well-thought-out structured arrangement that heightens the emotions within a song.
If you’ve never heard of vocal arranging, you’re not alone! Vocal arranging is one of the secrets of many great albums. All major labels work with vocal arrangers on their artist’s albums.
Vocal arranging builds the architecture of a performance or recording, ensuring that the vocals complement the lyrics and instrumentation and elevating the vocalist’s natural voice to guide the listener on a well-crafted peak emotional journey.
