Right about this time of year, it’s easy to get a little down in the dumps. The holiday frenzy is over – the celebrations are done, the noise is winding down and the weather is frigid. You’re still in throes of writing your New Years Resolutions, but you’ve done that before and they didn’t stick, so now what?
Well, I heard a phase from one of my favorite yoga teachers last week and it led me to write this article. I’ve recently become a fan of Kundalini Yoga. Yogi Bhajan is the spiritual leader who introduced Kundalini Yoga to the United States. And every year he has a thought for his students to ruminate on throughout the year. 2014’s thought is “There is a way through any block.” And as I thought about that some more, I realized that one of my teachings (which comes from my life lessons) is how to move through blocks. I wanted to share 3 tools I’ve used in my life and with my students, to move through those seeming stop points.
And – you have them with you all the time. You don’t have to look anywhere but inside. And you can pretty much live by them, if you have the guts.
3 Tools to Move Through Any Block
1) Your body.
If you think about it, we are capable of lying to ourselves. Yep – and I admit, that’s some crazy stuff! But what if you don’t know it? There is one foolproof tool to always know when you are – lying to yourself that is. Your body. Your body won’t lie to you. So for instance, you have a friend that you think you like, but every time you are around her you are uncomfortable. You feel anxious. Your throat is all knotted up. Your blood pressure rises. Your stomach hurts. Your body is telling you different information – that you are uncomfortable around her. Your body won’t lie to you.
The question to ask is = “how does that feel?”
2) The voice in your head.
But the trick is, there is more than one ;). The one I’m talking about is the one that keeps telling you when something isn’t right. Call it your higher power or your intuition, or gut instinct.
Listening to your gut – or intuition. It’s an ancient art. Knowing when to listen to the voice in your head and better yet, how to decipher which voice is speaking is the art of living a wise life. There are many voices chatting all the time – almost like a commentator commenting and evaluating what is going on. That’s not the one I’m talking about. It’s the quieter, calmer one that you often have to create a little space or quiet to hear (meditation is great for this). Most answers you are looking for are inside you – if you can quiet your mind enough to hear the one that knows. And if you get silence? The answer hasn’t arrived yet. Keep inquiring but don’t force an answer.
3) Knowing what you want.
Many times what keeps us stuck or blocked is not knowing what we want and then rushing to the answer before we know. Which only ends up filling up our time with things that are not our destiny! All because we didn’t take the time to find out what we want and then stick to it! What are your desires? Your true ones. Yep, they’re in you. Do you know what they are? If you don’t know – ask. Who? You. How? For 15 days before you go to bed, ask yourself what you really want. Then let go and sleep, dream. Let the answers reveal themselves to you in whatever way they come over those 15 days. They may come to you in dreams, a book you read, a movie you see, a conversation with a good friend, or from a sudden “ah-ha” realization. Let go of how.
Happy 2014! Share what you want for the new year in the comments below! I can’t wait to hear them!
