Last week Bob Lefsetz sent out an email about an industry pow wow he was at with Jason Flom (Pres. of Virgin Records and father of a former student). They were having a discussion about Adele and why she has sold almost 13 million of “21” in the US while artists like Lorde and Taylor Swift are struggling to sell 2 million.
Comments were tossed around about her being overweight and an “everyday woman”, having an amazing voice, etc. Bob mentioned credibility, of which all is true. But what took Adele’s record over the top for me was raw unbridled truth she told. Unflinchingly raw and real, it struck us to the bone.
What raw truth are you telling in your music? And if you haven’t struck that vein yet, head back to your writing cave and dig deeper.
Adele’s record is a sure sign that you can’t have a record of that magnitude without a powerful raw message that people can relate to. What do you think?
Rumor has it, her third studio album is to be titled ‘25’ and is set to release its first single in March 2015…
