Are You In A Hurry?

Do you ever notice how much time it takes to create music?

When the “iron’s hot” I can easily spend entire 10-14 hour days songwriting and recording and then do it over again for multiple days in a row. I remember a time a few years ago, I closed my voice studio and went on a songwriting sabbatical (during the making of the Circle of Fire record). My husband would come home from work around 6 pm and I’d be up to my ears in instruments, cables and headphones and still in my PJ’s.

Sometimes artists get so into their art that they wall themselves off from the world. Us creative types have to be careful not to isolate from the world or live in a dream world always thinking about the future! I personally know that one!

One of my students recently came to me asking me advice on how to get her music out there. I noticed that she still had a lot of work to do on her record. It struck me, this whole thing about stardom and being in such a hurry to get out there. Guys, don’t worry about the connections. That’s actually the easier part. Focus on making the best record you can, then put your attention on getting out there.

A few tips:

• Work with credible people. Sometimes when people “work for free” things don’t come to fruition because either they are not reliable or there are too many misunderstandings.
• Don’t get stuck trying to do it all on your own. No one does it alone. Get help. Don’t waste valuable time trying to reinvent the wheel. Someone out there knows more than you do.
• Keep a list of goals – always. Write it all down – everything. Something about writing it down helps your brain go to work manifesting.
