Come join our Artist Sanctuary and find out how.

How Indie Artists Can Build a Dedicated and Loyal Audience in 2026

To build an audience in 2026, musicians should focus on creating meaningful content that resonates with fans, engaging consistently across platforms, and leverage storytelling to build their fanbase. In this way artists are building loyal audiences that are captivated by their work, their values and personality.

  • Inside my Artist Sanctuary Global Membership of musicians is a place to get top-shelf personalized guidance for your music For a minimal cost you can try it for a month and opt out at any time. Click here to: Learn more about the Artist Sanctuary Membership

Here’s a quick outline of the topics covered in today’s blog:

  • Create content that resonates using storytelling + personality branding
  • Use socials and fan hubs to peak interest, invite to events + shows that build your list
  • Broadcast open-access livestreams to attract fans to your BTS community membership
  • Live shows to build your local fanbase
  • Managing your schedule + expectations

Let’s dive in!

1. Create content that resonates using storytelling + personality branding

“Content is now your main engine for growth, and release campaigns exist to support it, not the other way around.” ~ Phil Loutsis (TTay Founder)

But it’s more than just posting every day. It’s posting content that connects, and that is way easier said than done.

Here are some of the techniques that successful indie artists use in their content.

  1. Using storytelling to connect. People bond over stories. It’s not enough to release your music, you now need to entice people to listen, connect with what you are trying to do with your music—and storytelling is a great way to achieve that.
  2. Sharing your values and personality – don’t button up too much. Its hard for people to connect to people they don’t know. When you hide yourself behind the music you risk losing fans.

Try this:

  • Share the stories behind the songs.
  • Share personality quirks so people can connect with you more.
  • Share the reason you do music and what you are trying to do.

2. Use socials and fan hubs to peak interest, invite to events + shows that build your list

The way to use social media is to use it correctly instead of letting it use you.

That means use socials to peak interest, invite to Livestreams, events and shows in order to build your list.

Using social media solely to grow your social media numbers is letting social media use you.

Remember this: Never rely solely upon social media platforms where you don’t have direct access to users. If a platform closes or you lose access to one of your profiles (it can happen) – you’ll have no way to contact those people. Regular ask them to subscribe to your list (explain why).

3. Broadcast open-access livestreams to attract fans to your BTS community membership

Livestreams are a great way to peak interest in your music and for potential fans to get to know you and your personality which helps them to bond and opt-in to your list for more.

Do regular Livestreams to attract your audience. At each Livestream you can invite them to something: a show, the next livestream, an event, join your list for insider news and merch.

4. Live shows to build your local fanbase

Build local to go global. Today’s artist who is interested in building a live audience (vs. building a music sync catalog or a non-performing artist) needs to start where you are and build a loyal following in your local community.

Keep in mind that your music (like mine), may not fit a typical music venue—or that might not be where your audience is. So don’t be afraid to look into other venue types to create your own live shows and experience for your audience.

Your local fanbase will build your following so you can expand to regional and potentially global audiences.

5. Managing your schedule + expectations

Managing your schedule and your expectations will help prioritize your to do list and give better perspective on your overall and day-to-day growth.

Try this:

  • Batch your social media content every 2 weeks. Sit down for 3-4 hours every few weeks to plan out the next few weeks of content. Then schedule out your posts ahead of time to save time.
  • Track your growth from week to week. Create a master spreadsheet to track your numbers.
  • Every Sunday, plan your to do list for the week ahead. Choose 1 main goal to prioritize with 2-3 micro goals.
  • Every month review your progress and tweak and adjust your to do list or strategy as needed.
  • Audience growth for artists tends to go slower than anticipated, but applying the suggestions in this blog will help you grow faster.
