Singers: Are You Just Sliding By With Your Vocals?

by Cari Cole

Are you putting in real time on your voice or do you just slide by hoping for the best? Are you often white-knuckling it through recording sessions or hoping your voice will hold up for your next gig? Do you sometimes feel like a fraud?

You’re not alone.

Many singers struggle needlessly with these fears.

Until they decide to get serious.

Until they decide to stop slacking and start doing their homework = daily technique + training.

You know I find most singers initially are pretty gun-shy about vocal technique. They’re afraid it will “take away” something natural or organic away from their sound – that they will “lose” something innately personal about their voice.

I understand that fear, I had it too.

And my boyfriend (and the lead guitarist in my band) also had that fear. He told me that I didn’t need to train, all I had to do was sing. But singing over the high decibel levels of our rock band was causing my throat to hurt and me to lose my voice – so thank g’ness I didn’t listen and got a vocal coach who made me stronger. I innately knew it could be easier and boy was I right! And it didn’t take anything away from my voice, it only made me sound ten times better!

One of my students recently shared a similar sentiment on Facebook:

The problem is no one likes to say they had help; everyone wants to seem naturally gifted. I get it. So then let training be your secret weapon. Cause you’re going to need it if you want a serious career. Every single great singer I know is in training or was at one point. It’s not because they’re not talented because talent and taste are your STYLE. But vocal strength is not necessarily inherent – it’s not natural – you have to train for it. It’s like going to the gym to get a strong body. You gotta train if you want a strong voice.

Vocal training (with the right vocal coach like me ;)) only improves your VOCAL sound and helps you express even more emotion because your voice can handle it.

What would it be like if you really trained? Like a serious 5-6 days a week regimen with a serious vocal program? What if you got to experience what it’s like to have your voice at your command?

It’s totally possible. You can.

In all truth, the most important thing on your record is your vocals. Period. No matter what anyone says, you can have the best songs, the best producer and the best musicians in the world and if you don’t have great vocals, you have nothing. Make a pact with yourself to uplevel your vocals today! One year from now you’ll be so glad you did!
