Outside Your Comfort Zone

This post helps you get started, but that’s only the beginning. My Step Up to the Spotlight Artist Development Program will take you step-by-step through the artist development process to build your artistry and career. This is the same process I’ve used to help my clients win Grammy Awards, get featured in Rolling Stone, secure major licensing deals, get signed to management and labels, and live the dream. What would it feel like to be regularly performing to thousands of people singing the words to your songs and supporting your career by the end of this year? Most likely if you are reading this, your goals in life exist outside of your comfort zone whether or not you have yet got in gear.

That’s one of my artists Margot Bitter (in the pic) who just stepped outside of her comfort zone right there at the Bitter End last Thursday night.

Being a great artist and doing your own music for a living requires that you are willing to step outside your comfort zone for longer than you think is even possible. It’s a task that few really have the staying power to pursue – and it’s full of rejection. Sound like torture? BUT — if you have someone with you – someone who believes in you, it makes all the difference, and sometimes can be the determining factor in your success.

I don’t know why that is, but it’s just the way it is. Perhaps we are not meant to do things alone.

I remember when I did the Circle of Fire record in 2002. I was 38 when I started writing that record (late in the game for music biz standards) – and it might not have come to be if I hadn’t gotten a push – a shove actually – from someone close to me. It went on to sell 25,000 copies, change lives and win many awards. Go figure. I guess I had some talent. Most of us do not have the ability to see our own talent because we can’t see ourselves objectively (that’s why we sit in the therapists office – or study Buddhism or meditation – to develop the “witness” – the “observer”). Well, I know that most talent needs a push – and sometimes a massive shove. I see it and do just that every day. And I’m not talking about encouraging talent where there is none. I mean TALENT.

Probably also we hold back because what have to do – if we take that shove and turn it into something – is to show up. To show up and actually do the work – to push, probe, dig and unearth some uncomfortable stuff to get to the good stuff. Kind of like the seed pushing through the earth or the child pushing through the birth canal – it’s not pretty, let alone the mess that comes before the good stuff arrives.

The path to your music is the same.

And one thing is absolutely true: you will not get there by doing the same things over and over again.

The definition of insanity by Albert Einstein is: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

In order to get to where you’re going, you’re going to have to do things differently than you ever have before – and that, by nature, is not comfortable for humans.

But if you’re up to something – if you have plans for world domination or to just change the world in some way with your music, then it’s time you get up off that couch, turn off the TV and get ready for the ride of your life.

Because you’re going to have to reach inside of yourself and pull out a strength and purpose you didn’t even know you had. You’re going to have to reach deep down for what you probably least expect, what you try to hide, what is most vulnerable and what you most protect the most – and then…

.. you’re going to expose it to millions of people (and I don’t mean taking your clothes off – although it works for Lady Gaga lol). Wow – really? Yep.

That’s what creating great art is about. The good stuff anyway – the stuff worth hitting rewind.

All I can say is that you will know when you are ready. You will know because nothing will stop you. Not even fear.

Success comes first from intention and vision – and the inner conviction that you somehow must achieve your goals.
