The Misplaced Musician: Don’t Miss Your Calling

Every day, amidst the hustle and bustle of the music industry, I come across handfuls of super talented artists — who don’t quite fit into the industry standard. It reminds me of my career. I had to find a different route for my music than the traditional pop route. I ended up getting signed by the publisher of “The Four Agreements” (NY Times bestseller) and put out a record inspired by the book.

If you haven’t found your place in music yet, you might be trying to force your music to fit the industry instead of making the music you want to hear and finding where you belong.

Now that artists are more on their own than ever before, with more online generic advice than ever before it’s getting harder to know the right steps to take for you and your music.

There is not one path for an artist, but many. And to follow generic advice will distract you and could make you lose your way. Because, while you’re busy following paths other artists have used, hoping that will get you where you’re going, you’re missing yours.

Each artist’s path is different.

How do you figure out what your path is?

When it comes to careers, artists tend to try to do too much on their own without getting feedback. It’s impossible to be objective and it’s easy to miss things. It’s easy to end up spinning your wheels and miss key information you need to grow and build.

Take Laura for example. When I met her she had a heart full of passion, a record under her belt and a hopeful vision for her career. But she didn’t have strong enough songs or branding to actually get her there. So we took a deep dive into her music, her songwriting, who she was as an artist, and what she wanted to say. Then we put those elements into her music.

Next, we looked at her branding and brought it to a higher level so that her images matched her music and told you who she really was. The images looked like the music sounded which helped people visually understand what the music was going to sound like.

Then we worked on developing a real story behind her music and helped her find the place she had been looking for. Now she’s booking out tours, winning awards and living the dream. It’s so rewarding to help artists actualize their dream careers.

The main takeaway is that she was open to learning and not working in isolation anymore.

It starts by building your community of artists and support to work with as you go. People who believe in you, who will tell you the truth, who give you a leg up, and actually help you go somewhere.
