7 Steps to Design a Plan to Elevate Your Music Career in 2025

This post helps you get started, but that’s only the beginning. My Artist Sanctuary Monthly Membership will take you step-by-step through the artist development process to build your artistry and career–the same process I’ve used to help my clients win Grammy Awards, get featured in Rolling Stone, secure major licensing deals, get signed to management and labels, and live the dream. What would it feel like to be regularly performing to thousands of people singing the words to your songs and supporting your career by the end of this year? Come join our Artist Sanctuary and find out how.

In today’s blog, I am going to lay out 7 steps to help you design a plan to elevate your music career.

The very first thing I want you to do is to make a declaration. A declaration to claim yourself as an artist. No matter where you are on your journey, it’s hard to take the steps without the faith and commitment to fuel the path ahead.

Say out loud I AM AN ARTIST. And let that statement fuel your daily journey. Remember to say it out loud every day no matter how you feel or how much you have or have not yet accomplished.

Here are the 7 Steps to Design a Plan to Elevate your Music this year.

1. Build Your Vision

There are many paths in music— many ways to create a successful career. Whether you just want to sing or write songs for a living, or maybe you want to tour the world, or build your own music and creator brand online? Or maybe you just want to be a local artist, performing nearby and staying close to home. Maybe you want to build a sync catalog and get your music licensed in film or TV.

The first step to success is knowing what you want. You don’t have to know all of the ins and outs, just start with what your first instinct was as you read my list above and start there.

The truth is, we can’t get to where we want until we know where we are going.

Write out your vision of your music. Include the following:

    • What do I want to do in music? If I could, what is my desire? Do I want to:
      • Perform
      • Sing or write songs for a living
      • Tour regionally, nationally or internationally
      • Perform locally and build a close-to-home career
      • Play at music festivals
      • Get licensed in film or TV
      • Build an online brand?
      • Other: ____________________
  • The Big Goal: Pick one thing that would be amazing to accomplish and keep this as a motivational goal to inspire your journey.
    • Play Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Colorado
    • Win a Grammy
    • Perform at Royal Albert Hall in London
    • Get my music in a film
    • Other: ___________________________
  • Now write out your vision of what you’d like to accomplish in your career.

2. Write Your Mission Statement

Your mission is comprised of what you want your music to do in the world.

Start by finishing this sentence:

  • My mission with my music is to: [fill in the blank]

Very often we want our music to touch our audience to help them with some issue they have. It is usually closely related to the reason you started making music.

Write out the mission of your music. Include the following:

  • Why I starting making music
  • The contribution I want my music to make to the world
  • The people or community I want my music to help

3. Define the Big Goal

So that big goal you wrote out in Step 1 above— let’s go deeper on that to give it more bones and impact.

My Big Goal with my music—if I am lucky enough to achieve it— is: (fill in the blank).

Now let’s peel back the layers to create more connection to this goal.

  • Why do you want to achieve this goal?
  • What would achieving this do for you?
  • And why is that important?
  • What would come from that?

Digging deeper into your goal helps to understand why you want it. We are often chasing a feeling behind the goal. Getting in touch with it will help fuel the goal!

4. Elevate Your Artistry

Every time an artist makes a record is an opportunity to elevate. Artists are always trying to out do their last effort. This is a healthy (and smart) approach to expanding your career. The foundation of achievement in music is artist development and the full maturing of your artistic talents and development. Be so good they can’t ignore you.

With over 100,000 songs being uploaded on digital platforms every day the need to stand out in the sea of music becomes even more important today. You can only go as far as your talent can impact.

In 2025 artists will continue to invest even more in their talent, development, and music education, improving their skills and deepening their artistry. This focus on skill development will help musicians stay competitive and create better music to help them grow and build their career and success.

Work on your skills more. Develop and perfect your voice. Improve your songwriting and performing skills. Learn theory, read music. Become so good that you stand out.

This is developed with a strong daily routine and foundation in music.

We are big on artist development. It’s not easy to find this kind of specialized direction—so I put together some tools to help you grow:

6. Build a Plan and Put Yourself on a Schedule

Knowing what you want, then building your vision and mission sets you up for the next step which is to build your plan and roadmap.

Try this:

  • Braindump a big to do list. Try to think of everything you need to do to move forward.
  • Next, prioritize your list in order of what comes first.
  • Now, map out the next few months of to do’s
  • Next, schedule your to do list right on your calendar (I call it “living the calendar”)
  • If you’re really good at planning, map out the next year or two.

7. Find a Music Mentor and Community for Accountability and Support in Real Time

Music mentorship plays a vital role in helping musicians build sustainable careers. A mentor can provide guidance, support, and valuable industry insights, enabling artists to navigate the challenges of the music industry and achieve long-term success.

At its core, mentorship is about unlocking what’s already within you—your voice, your story, your power. Working with an artist development expert isn’t just about perfecting your craft; it’s about discovering your true north as an artist.

Through this journey, you gain more than technical skills—you uncover your authentic artistry and learn how to align it with the industry in a way that feels true to YOU. It’s a sacred space where creativity meets strategy, where every conversation builds your confidence and refines your vision.

At Cari Cole Voice & Music, we believe in creating a foundation for longevity, authenticity, and impact. It’s not just about the music you make—it’s about the legacy you leave behind.

If you’ve felt the pull to deepen your artistry and elevate your career, the universe is calling. The world is waiting for your voice—your truth.
